On-Demand Generation of Artwork Collections Using Search Behavior and Deep Learning

About IXXI

We are IXXI — a Nijmegen-based scale-up reinventing wall decoration. With a team of 15 entrepreneurial creatives, we work at the intersection of design, technology, and e-commerce. Our patented modular wall system has won multiple international design awards and is used by leading brands and museums, including the Van Gogh Museum and Universal Pictures.

At IXXI, we value ownership, speed, and creativity. No bureaucracy — just room to experiment and make real impact. Innovation is central to how we work: we continuously explore how emerging technologies such as AI and data science can enhance our creative processes and product development.

The Thesis

The rise of generative AI models such as DALL·E, Midjourney, and similar systems has fundamentally changed how visual content is created. While generating artwork has become technically easier than ever, the real challenge now lies in relevance, originality, and timing.

IXXI currently collaborates with a large network of artists who offer their work through our platform. In parallel, we are exploring a future in which artworks — and even complete collections — can be generated on demand, without relying on pre-existing images or artist-supplied content.

The goal of this master’s thesis is to investigate how user search behavior (e.g. search terms, filters, trends, and contextual signals) can be translated into the automatic generation of trend-setting, visually coherent artworks and collections using deep learning and generative models.

A central research question could be: How can we automatically generate relevant, aesthetically strong, and commercially attractive artwork collections based on user search behavior?

Possible Research Directions

Depending on your interests and academic background, the thesis may focus on topics such as:

  • Analysis and interpretation of user and search behavior in an e-commerce context
  • Clustering and representation of visual styles, themes, and trends
  • Development or application of generative models (e.g. diffusion models or GANs)
  • Evaluation criteria for generated artworks (aesthetics, diversity, relevance)
  • Benchmarking different model architectures and prompting strategies
  • Ethics and authorship in AI-generated art

The exact scope and methodology will be defined in consultation with you and your university.

Your Responsibilities

As a master’s student at IXXI, you will be responsible for:

  • Formulating a clear problem statement and research design
  • Conducting literature research in AI, generative models, and/or recommender systems
  • Analyzing (anonymized) search and behavioral data
  • Designing, implementing, and testing models or algorithms
  • Critically evaluating and benchmarking results
  • Translating research insights into practical applications for IXXI
  • Documenting your work in an academic master’s thesis
